There were 83 deaths in the MGM Grand Hotel fire in Las Vegas. Nev. last Friday. One of those killed was Charles B. Trammel. Jr., formerly of Columbus A series of strong earthquakes ripped through southern Italy Sunday night, killing at least 200 people and injuring hundreds of others as the tremors collapsed buildings. The Tryon Kiwanis Club meets today at 12:45 p.m. at Pacolet River Plantation and the Tryon Lions Club meets at 7 p.m. at the same location. Most communities are having Union Thanksgiving Services Landrum will have a service Wed. at 7:30 p.m. at the Philadelphia Presbyterian Church; Columbus will have one Wed. at 7:30 p.m. at the Columbus Baptist Church; Saluda will have a service Wed at 7:30 p.m. at the Saluda First Baptist Church; Tryon is having a service Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Tryon Presbyterian Church; Continued Un Back Page Head Clinic To Open Feb. 1 Dr. Mark Hicklin will speak at the Green creek School cafeteria Monday, Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. about the plans for the future at Head Clinic, due to open in Green Creek, Feb. 1 All residents and friends of the community are urged to mark this date and come out for an informal get together and to meet Dr. Hicklin, who will be one of the physicians in charge of the clinic He will be joined in his practice by Dr Sherrill Braswell soon The two are specialists in Family Practice, and will operate Foothills Family Medicine. Dr. Hicklin is already practicing in the FEM Office in the former TMA building on Highway 176 in Tryon. Operation Outreach of St Luke's Hospital arranged this program as part of the continuing plan io acquaint the people of Polk County and Upper Greenville and Spartanburg counties with the medical care available at St. Luke's. Organizations wanting a medical program should phone Genelle Hooker at St. Luke's and she will arrange one. Operation Outreach program last week was featured by Dr. Hicklin speaking at the Saluda Community Club. Later in December, Vocational School students from the Greer- Campobello area will come to St Luke's for two informative sessions about the hospital and health careers. — Reporter Union Thanksgiving In Columbus The Columbus Community Thanksgiving service will be Wednesday at 7:30 p.m at the Columbus Baptist Church. Columbus Parade Is Dec. 20th The Polk County Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a Christmas parade in Columbus on Dec. 20th. The Town of Columbus is putting up a Christmas tree in the Stearns School yard and Santa Claus will be parked under the tree with his sleigh. Church choirs are invited to participate in singing Christmas Carols along with the public. Local bands participating so far are Polk Central, Tryon. Landrum, Campobello-Gramling and Chapman Anyone who would like to participate with floats, antique cars, etc. may call the Polk County Chamber of Commerce at 894-8236. Fire The Landrum Fire Department was called out Saturday about 5:30 p m to a house near the 1st Nat’l Bank of S. C. The fire, believed to have started from a wood stove and two rooms were damaged. The house owned by Bobby Settles, was vacant at the time of the fire, but the house was being made ready for occupancy Parents Invited Superintendent Larry Coble is inviting parents of the Polk County school children to meet informally with him from 10 a.m. until noon at the county schools for coffee and discussion. Meetings have already been held at Green Creek and Saluda. This week's schedule is as follows: Tuesday. November 25, Stearns School, Columbus- Wednesday, November 26, Mill Spring School. Parents and other interested citizens are welcome to come and exchange ideas with the Superintendent On Friday December 5, there will be a discussion period at the Sunnv View School, and on Thursday December 18, a meeting at Polk Central High School.
